Kokoro

by Horiyoshi III

The follow-up to Ryushin, Kokoro (heart, mind, spirit) is a deluxe, limited-edition (550 copies worldwide), hardbound book that features embossed and lacquered titles with calligraphy by Horiyoshi III. Produced and printed in Sweden by Kofuu Senjuu Publications, there will not be a softcover edition of this book.

There have been a number of great books on Horiyoshi III's magnificent catalog of work, but in most cases there was something missing. While these books presented Horiyoshi's works of art and were often a stunning visual feast, they didn't fully illustrate the creator behind them. In a sense, the traditional Japanese tattoos of Horiyoshi III were merely presented like paintings in a gallery, lacking in context and insight into Horiyoshi III, the man.

Kokoro contains a large amount of newly-captured photography, both of Horiyoshi III as an artist, in private and in portrait, as well as many new images of his Irezumi work, both new and old. Accompanied by short texts, poetry, zen, and other descriptive passages, there has not been a more intimate look at Horiyoshi III. It is a joy to behold.
